Collection includes a typed copy of Wiegand's diary, entitled Arctic diary, in which he describes his 1912 voyage on board the C.G.S. Arctic along the coast of Labrador and in Hudson Bay, and a log of the ice conditions the Arctic encountered during this trip. A copy of Wiegand's monographs, Churchill and Nelson (published in University Magazine, Montreal, Feb., 1913) and The Arctic in Hudson Strait (published in the Canadian Courrier) are bound with the diary. Collection also includes a typescript of his essay entitled Marble Island - an Arctic beauty spot.

Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born on November 3, 1879 in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1897-1902. He was voted the best orator in 1900, and also worked for the school newspaper. In 1930 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, only the third such degree awarded. He then transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1903 with a degree from the School of Liberal Arts. He next enrolled at Harvard, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1...
